Functional Controller HR and Legal

The role and its responsibilities 
This is a global and highly visible role – based at the AkzoNobel Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands – in which you act as a critical and prominent Business Partner to the Functional Leadership Team. You are expected to make a real impact as you guide, challenge and drive long-term strategic planning for the function as well as mid and short-term execution. 

This requires you to bring a financial and economic perspective to decision making, ensuring that sound decisions are made in line with long term value creation while respecting constraints such as corporate policy, strategic ambition, operational goals and targets, as well as legal and social responsibility. This applies across the businesses and at a global level, based on relevant and accurate management information and with regard to key value drivers within operations, projects and capital expenditures to drive effectiveness and financial efficiency of the Function.

Further, you accurately and pro-actively manage all end-to-end financial planning and control, including the establishment of the operational plans as well as the on-going monitoring of the effects of their implementation. In doing so you provide meaningful insights and management information to steer performance by establishing accountability, transparency and the formulation of key value and performance drivers. As such, it is essential you collaborate effectively with corporate departments in order to manage cost allocation/pass-through and accounting processes.

In performing these activities you act as the conscience of the function and you fulfill the Compliance Officer’s role, ensuring correct representation of the functional financial statements and reporting process. You also ensure adequate representation of the functional interests in the development and maintenance of key enablers to radically increase functional efficiency (eg. IM systems, IC systems).

Candidate profile
To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration and 10+ years’ of experience as a controller in a business environment and/or functional area;
  • Strong strategic thinker with analytical skills and the ability to analyze, organize, summarize and articulate complex financial information for decision making;
  • Able to communicate effectively with management team members and senior leaders in a matrix organization, including the ability to articulate recommendations in a concise and timely manner;
  • Able to prioritize and work with multiple stakeholders simultaneously;
  • Proven experience in managing and leading an international team and delivering change management in a complex business environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including fluent written and spoken English.
