Access to Medicine Foundation
- Access to Medicine Foundation
Since 2008, the Foundation has published the Access to Medicine Index. The Access to Medicine Index is a biennial ranking and report that measure 20 of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies according to their efforts to improve access to medicine. The Index identifies best practices, highlights where progress is being made, and uncovers where critical action is still required. Alongside the Index, the Foundation publishes stand-alone studies about the pharmaceutical industry and is developing a new Access to Vaccines Index. The Foundation recently received new funding to develop a specific Antimicrobial Resistance Benchmark. Numerous international leaders have endorsed the work of the Access to Medicine Foundation. In 2016, a year-long independent evaluation of the Access to Medicine Index found that the tool “has made commendable contributions towards advancing the engagement of the pharmaceutical industry with the issue of access to medicine”. The Index acted as “a catalyst for accelerating ongoing access-to-medicine activities and as an inspiration for development of new activities.”
The mission of the Foundation is to guide and incentivize pharmaceutical companies to improve access to medicine in low- and middle-income countries.
